As part of his doctoral project Engage4Change, Jorge is facilitating co-creation sessions with older adults living in care homes in the Dreta de l’Eixample neighborhood in Barcelona. The group of co-creators went through a needs assessment process in which they self-reported physical activity levels, sedentary behavior and priorities regarding public space use. The co-creation sessions are focused on selecting and prototyping an outdoor space that enhances physical activity and social interaction among older adults, while giving urban visibility to this historically isolated share of the population in the urban setting. The sessions have revealed challenges such as movement restrictions and lack of autonomy within the group, but also their motivation for using public spaces if proper urban conditions, proximity and a sense of safety are achieved. Future sessions will be carried out with a group of community-dwelling older adults, and will be documented on a specific proposal in a selected space in the neighborhood with the support of professionals, family members and experts.
