During my secondment at Amsterdam UMC at the unit of Child and Adolescent Public Health Research and Innovation, I have been further working on a scientific article describing a framework to actualize youth empowerment within participatory action research aimed at health promotion. The framework paper – which is currently under review – is developed in collaboration with empowerment experts and depicts six elements that are needed for the actualization of (health) empowerment among youth. Fundamental is the creation or existence of an ‘enabling environment’ that is resourceful, supportive and meaningful. While striving for empowerment, it is important to be realistic and to take micro-, meso- and macro-level factors into account. As I believe the framework may contribute to the installation of a rigorous, thoughtful and ethical participatory or co-creation trajectory, I am very much excited to share it with you once it is published!
