Our recent study delved into the psychology behind co-creating a workplace health plan to tackle sedentary behaviour. Understanding this experience has helped us identify what drives engagement and enjoyment, and what might hinder progress.

The study involved eight interactive co-creation workshops (Oct – Dec 2022) where ten full-time employees (70% male) of a small-to-medium sized construction company volunteered as co-creators to form the workgroup. I conducted interviews with each co-creator to explore and understand their experiences.

Through my (thematic) analysis I generated six themes. The first theme relates to the motivation for joining the workgroup. Themes 2 to 4 explored their journey during the co-creation process, including team dynamics and challenges faced. Theme 5 highlighted the psychological impact from being involved. Lastly, theme 6 revealed how the workplace environment influenced their experience, underlying the other themes.

These valuable insights have already made a significant impact, improving co-creation processes in other organizations that we have worked with.

Although there is a growing recognition of the significance of co-creators’ experience (CCE) to the success of the process and potential impact on the co-created output, there is a gap in the aggregation of the literature regarding their experience. The aim of this scoping review was to explore empirical research on CCE among adults in all contexts. Two databases were searched, the Health CASCADE database and SCOPUS, retrieving over 11,000 papers. After removal of duplicates and thorough screening, almost 50 papers were included in the review. Preliminary findings reveal a mix of positive experiences, like enjoyment, and negative experiences, such as frustration, during co-creation. Moreover, both positive and negative psychological impacts from involvement in co-creation have been reported, such as increased knowledge or dissatisfaction with the process. These results offer valuable insights into co-creators’ participation and engagement. By understanding their experiences, we can enhance the co-creation process and maximize its impact.

Well-documented scientific evidence indicates that mobile health (mHealth) apps can improve the quality of life, relieve symptoms, and restore health for patients. In addition to improving patients’ health outcomes, mHealth apps reduce health care use and the cost burdens associated with disease management. Currently, patients and health care providers have a wide variety of choices among commercially available mHealth apps. However, due to the high resource costs and low user adoption of mHealth apps, the cost-benefit relationship remains controversial. When compared to traditional expert-driven approaches, applying human-centered design (HCD) may result in more usable, acceptable, and effective mHealth apps. In this paper, we summarize current HCD practices in mHealth development studies and make recommendations to improve the sustainability of mHealth. These recommendations include consideration of factors regarding culture norms, iterative evaluations on HCD practice, use of novelty in mHealth app, and consideration of privacy and reliability across the entire HCD process. Additionally, we suggest a sociotechnical lens toward HCD practices to promote the sustainability of mHealth apps. Future research should consider standardizing the HCD practice to help mHealth researchers and developers avoid barriers associated with inadequate HCD practices.

During a short oral, we presented to the ISBNPA community our accomplished project to create a database grouping all scientific literature about co-creation. Based on a novel methodology combining artificial intelligence and systematic review methods, we exposed the robust quality of the database, the results of bibliographic analysis, and how it can help to tackle the crucial issue of fragmentation of the co-creation field. The database is freely available on Zenodo (https://zenodo.org/record/7849501 ).

A peer-reviewed paper describing its creation is now available on JMIR (https://www.jmir.org/2023/1/e45059). You can also read our last blog post concerning the project: “If You Want To Find Scientific Evidence About Co-Creation, Look No Further Than The Health CASCADE Co-Creation Database” (https://healthcascade.eu/if-you-want-to-find-scientific-evidence-about-co-creation-look-no-further-than-the-health-cascade-co-creation-database/)

Jorge R. Zapata-Restrepo’s presentation at ISBNPA 2023 conference in the symposium ‘Engaging different generations to co-create healthy urban spaces in Europe and Africa’, showcasing his groundbreaking project, EngAGE4Change. This initiative, part of his work with the Health Physical Activity and Sport Research Group at Blanquerna – Ramon Llull University, focuses on involving elderly residents, particularly those in care homes, in co-creating healthier urban spaces in Barcelona, Spain. The project aims to enhance physical activity and reduce loneliness among this demographic, which is often the most sedentary and isolated. EngAGE4Change uses a mix of co-creation methods, such as participatory mapping, photovoice, community walk audits, to document the distribution of care homes, understand the needs of the co-creators, classify the built environment around them and draft an urban space proposal. Zapata-Restrepo’s work emphasizes the need for inclusive urban spaces, highlighting the importance of elderly citizens in urban planning and design. This innovative approach promises to reshape how cities cater to their aging populations.

Sara Rachdan recently showcased the YoCo (Youth Co-creation) project at the ISBNPA conference during the symposium “Engaging different generations in research to co-create healthy urban spaces in Europe and Africa.” The project focuses on the built environment’s impact on adolescents’ physical activity and well-being and the co-creation of physically and socially activating youth-friendly public space together with adolescents..

During her presentation, Sara shared insights into co-creating with adolescents and shed light on the multi-disciplinary approach utilised to facilitate the co-creation process and inform the design process. She outlined the three distinct phases of the project and highlighted the key methods used during the needs assessment and ideation and design phase, ultimately leading to the final design outcome co-created together with the Amsterdam Municipality, Speelplan and Students of the Lely Lyceum.

The YoCo project is now transitioning to its final phase, the implementation and evaluation phase, with the co-created design scheduled for implementation in early 2024.

At ISBNPA, Lea Rahel Delfmann and Janneke de Boer, alongside Danique Heemskerk, shared insights on co-creating school-based sleep interventions in a symposium titled “Let us sleep! Promoting adolescent sleep health in Belgium and the Netherlands.”

Lea’s presentation centred on a co-creation process, wherein she collaborated with students to adapt a school-based sleep intervention. To make co-creation more accessible and less resource consuming, she conducted a shortened co-creation process. In this presentation, Lea provided insights into the experiences of adolescents throughout this co-creation process. Findings highlighted that a condensed co-creation process, aimed at adapting interventions, can yield comparable benefits to a more extended co-creation process.

Janneke’s presentation focused on the co-creation of an implementation plan for this school-based sleep intervention with teachers. Emphasizing the significance of implementation is crucial, given its frequent challenges. Janneke detailed the experiences of teachers during this co-creation journey, revealing that job demands pose a significant barrier to active participation in the process. Importantly, her findings underscored the necessity for universal teacher support to ensure the intervention’s adequate implementation.

Our recent interactive Dare2Share session at ISBNPA 2023 was an absolute hit! Packed with enlightening presentations and engaging activities. We kicked off with the ‘Church of Fail’ method, creating a safe space for participants to share their failure stories about recruitment, evaluation, and data management. They answered three questions: What did you fail at? How did you cope with it? What would you do differently? Next, in the ‘Solution Generation’ activity, groups of participants tackled common co-creation failures armed with our Health CASCADE Solution Canvas, to brainstorm and discuss potential solutions. The activity closed with nominated spokespersons from each group sharing the insights and solutions generated in the activity. The Dare2Share session ended with a few key reflections on what we learned together, and excitement filled the air as participants expressed their eagerness to implement this method within their organizations, fueled by the realization that embracing failure is the key to genuine progress. Let’s foster a culture of learning and innovation by embracing the power of failure! Want to know more?
